One Toddler

Cheap.

I think his Daddy has been showing him too much YouTube.

Shopping is not my boy’s forte.  Old ladies (and a few young ones) were giving me dirty looks today.  Apparently I can’t control my child well enough for their sensitivities.  The problem today?  Balls.  F-ing balls.  I’m beginning to hate balls.  I want to write to Target and ask them to remove all balls…or items that can look like balls from a distance…what the heck, how about anything that is round…just take them away please.  Today I would not hand him a giant ball from the bin.  He made me regret it, though I am quite proud of myself for not giving in to his attempt to manipulate me into giving him his way.  I chose to ignore the fit, pushing the stroller through the gaping aisles, stopping to look blindly at items of interest, with my child screaming at the top of his bloody lungs, turning purple in the face, liquid running out of every hole in his face.  He was drenched in sweat, writhing in his seat, and yet, I smiled politely at the judgmental old ladies, pushing on.  I picked him up at one point, hoping to comfort, but when he raked his nails across my face, and kicked me in the legs, I wrestled him back into the stroller, strapping him in.  He didn’t like that very much.  And yet, I *think* I won the battle.  When he started sobbing sadly for, “Mamaaaaaaa,” I knew his anger was spent, and he knew he wouldn’t get his way.  I was able to pick him up at that point, and my sweet boy was back, the demon exorcised once more.

“Dear God, please let me never forget what shopping with a toddler is like, so that I may look upon harried mothers and their screaming children with compassion, rather than disgust.  Amen.”

“Brrrrr! Almanac Predicts Cold, Wet Winter!”

Says AOL News….

Shocking!

Maybe I should start making my own predictions…

Leaves in the northern half of the country will change color and drop within the next two months.

Shocking!

Nights soon to be cooler.

Shocking!

Heating costs will rise this winter.

Shocking!

Please pardon my sarcasm, but I couldn’t help thinking, “No sh*t Sherlock” when I read that headline this morning.  🙂

And I must say, I’m ready.  I could never live in a part of the country that doesn’t experience the seasons.  Maybe it’s because I’ve grown up with four seasons, maybe it’s just my personality…(I’m the type of person who needs to rearrange the furniture now and then, and change paint colors every few years.)  The change from Summer to Autumn is only second to Winter to Spring in my heart.  I LOVE Autumn!  I love the cooler nights, and warm days.  I love the fall skies.  I adore the changing colors, and the crisp smell that comes in Fall.  I love picking apples, and baking apple pies with friends.  I love shifting my menu from grilling meals to crockpot stews and soups, and baked hams and turkeys.  I love the swish swish of people walking past my house through the leaves that have dropped from my maple trees.  I love our Balloon Festival, and the freezing cold dark morning that draws us out of our beds before dawn, coffee and donuts in hand, to see the morning liftoff.  I love the return of a schedule and predictability, although the summer break from those are most welcome.

My only slight regret is that my girls go back to school next Thursday.  I will miss having all my little chickadees at home.  However, they are ready.  They are beginning to get on each other’s nerves, and I find myself needing to play mediator more and more often…definitely time to get them back to their own lives and friends.  And I would be lying if I didn’t admit to looking a little forward to some daily alone time that Mister’s naptime will give me.  (Okay, so maybe I’m looking a lot forward to it….sue me why don’tcha!)  😉

And speaking of hot air balloons, we had the good fortune to come across these on the way home from the fair on Friday night.

County Fair

Well, it’s mid-August which means County Fair time in these here parts.  😉

Although we only spent a couple of hours there last night (missing some of the more exciting things like rides and sausage and peppers) we did manage to see a lot of livestock, and enjoy some shakes and sugar fritters.  🙂  My camera was very excited about the outing.  Here is a sampling…more on flickr if you’re interested!

And then there was a group of Amish couples…At a distance I ignorantly thought “reenactors” and then realized as we ambled closer to the group that these were in fact modern day Amish citizens.  I   couldn’t resist snapping a shot of the group, but this gentleman in particular commanded my attention.  I thought the black and white treatment fitting in this case.

And here’s the sepia version.  Can’t decide which I like better.
