Thanks Ivoryhut!!

So, I promised myself that I was going to turn off all computers this afternoon.  I’ve been way too “plugged in” the last few days.  But, I did get my kitchen cleaned, some laundry folded, my daughter’s science project photographed, and…well, that’s it, but I need to take baby steps back out of this addiction.  😉  Well, and then it was time for lunch, so “what’s wrong with a little internetting whilst sustenating” I thought.  I happened to have my e-mail window open, and *click*…I’ve got mail!!!  So, of course I ran right on over to check it out.  It happened to be from our good cyber-friend Ivoryhut…she sent along this little piece of loveliness.  You know me…

“Disneyworld and an Idol named Cookie…they forever go together, they’re a classic combination…”

Check it out!

Why the porch is the next project…

See this?  This is what I call a big problem.

We used to love having birds roost in our porch rafters.  “Awwww…the babies are so cute!”

Then we had bird mites….in the house.  “Kill them!!  Kill them all!!!”

Okay, so I’m not that heartless and neither is Zan, but since we can’t have them building nests here anymore, we have a problem.

This Mama has been building and re-building her nest for three weeks now.  We keep taking it down, other birds keep destroying it, and yet she frantically keeps rebuilding.  The photo is half a day’s progress.  She’s getting faster as each day passes.  She’s relentless.  And my heart bleeds for her.  Mother to Mother, I feel her intense need to see her children safely into the world…to protect them from harm once they’re here.  And everytime we destroy her nest, I swallow the lump in my throat.  She’s killing me with her desperation.

However, my need to protect my home and MY babies from bird mites is more important.

Sorry Mama, this nest can’t stay.  Now we bring out the Big Guns….aluminum pans.

Neat Finds Amongst the Rambling

So Mother’s Day weekend was made up of everything I love.  Time with family, time with friends, outdoor play time, house project time, homemade pizzas…(I made a pesto one that was to die for!)…ice cream shop visits, roses, Lowe’s, Chinese Food take-in, watching home videos of the kids…I couldn’t have asked for more!  One of my gifts from Zan and the kids was a day off to go and play photographer.  They came up with a list of places that they think I should go photograph on my free day!  Can’t wait…I’ve been saying I need a little “alone” time…I was thinking along the lines of grocery shopping by myself, or running errands alone.  This “alone time” will be 10 times more fun!

We started preparing for the deck!  Siding has been ripped off in preparation for the ledger board, sidewalk has been removed, and Zan started digging the holes for the footings.  Since we live so far up north, the footings have to run four feet deep, so it’s a big job.

Here’s the before shot of my messy backyard entryway.

We have lived here for 10 years, and are finally getting around to improving this part of the house.  Our home is 110 years old.  Since we moved in, things like broken windows, old wiring, plumbing problems, boiler replacement, uncovering the hard wood floors, and more have taken precedence over the outside.  It feels good to finally get around to it!

Zan made an interesting little discovery when he ripped off a board that was covering a space under the house.

There it was, this little charm just sitting on the ground.  His comment was, “This house likes to remind us now and then that we were meant to own it.”  I have to figure out what to do with it.  Any ideas?

Oh, and one more…wait, no…two more things.  On Saturday, there was this really neat “rainbow” (for lack of a better term) around the sun.  Maybe it could be called a halo?  Neat, eh?

Our Lost Boy said, “You take pictures of rainbows?”

“Yes…”

“Why?”

“Because they’re beautiful and I want to remember them.”
“Huh.”  He says.  “Weird.”

And last but not least…my roses.  I had no idea how difficult it was to photograph red roses!  This is pretty, but not what my eye sees.

My car…

So, I took my van in for a routine oil change this morning.  I happen to mention, “You know, my interior lights flicker a bit.  It’s just a minor annoyance, but thought I should mention it.”

An hour later Mr. Saturn Guy comes out and says, “Yeah…you know that little light problem?  You need a new alternator, and we aren’t going to let you drive home in the vehicle.  It’s not safe.  You’re lucky it didn’t die on you before now.”

YIKES!!!

So they had us safely stowed away in a rental (paid for by them) until tomorrow when it should be fixed.  I’m a *bit* nervous since the van isn’t even two years old yet, and it only has 14,000 miles on it.  But I’m grateful that it didn’t die on us while I was driving with all my sweeties in it.

So there went my morning.

And I *should* mention, I LOVE my Saturn!  It’s the third one we’ve owned, and this is truly the first unexpected problem to come along.  Hopefully it will be the last.  *crossing fingers*
